Happy 4th of July!

Transformer Marketing, CA, 4th of JulyFireworks, backyard barbecues, parades and celebrations galore.  That’s right, it’s the 4th of July.  My how time has flew by, but that’s a different story.  This year we wanted to do something fun and creative, as well as informative.  In honor of 2014’s Independence celebration we wanted to share with you a few fun facts about the holiday that you probably didn’t know.

  1. You’re celebrating on the wrong day!  According to author, Kenneth C. Davis, July 2nd would be the actual date to celebrate our nation’s independence.  “The fact is that John Adams wrote home to Abigail on the 3rd that this day, July 2nd will go down in history,” Davis said.  It wasn’t until July 4th that Congress ruled in favor of Independence Day, which is the date we celebrate today.
  2.  Founding Fathers.   Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who were instrumental in founding of the holiday, died on July 4th, 1826.
  3. It’s not just for the U.S.   Did you know that Rwanda and the Phillippines each share their Independence Day on July 4th also?
  4. We started the party much earlier.   Congress may have passed a bill to make it a national holiday in 1870, but we started the celebration 93 years earlier, in 1777.
  5. Happy Birthday!  For these famous people, the nation celebrates their birthday together:  Malia Obama, Calvin Coolidge, Gerard Debreu, Pam Shriver, & Becki Newton.
  6. Hot Dog Heaven.  Over 155 million hot dogs are enjoyed each 4th of July.   Can we make it 160 million this year?
  7. Meals were fancier back then.  In fact, the meal that John & Abigail Adams shared on July 4th, 1776 was turtle soup, New England poached salmon with egg sauce, green peas, and boiled new potatoes in jackets.  They didn’t have any hot dogs handy, so they had to settle.
  8. Pennsylvania is the most patriotic state.  Did you know that 11 places have the term, “liberty” in them and 33 places have “union.” in them?  Yup, so I guess that make the state of Brotherly Love, the most patriotic.
  9. Wild Turkeys.   Ben Franklin was displeased when the bald eagle was chosen to represent America.  Calling the eagle, “a bird of bad moral character.  He does not make his living honestly.”  Ben favored the hard-working wild turkey, calling the turkey a bird of courage. Huh, that left us scratching our heads too.
  10. Don’t ring that bell.  The Liberty Bell has not been rung since 1846 due to cracking in the iconic symbol, instead the bell is tapped 13 times to get the other non-cracking bells ringing.

We hope these fun facts will enhance your 4th of July celebration.  Especially if you start celebrating on July 2nd!

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!
